Georgia-Grown Blueberries

by Headless Relatives

/

about

A song about depression and desperation and mundane morning routines

lyrics

I rise before the dawn
Begins its Sisyphean ride
Across the wide expanse
Of the cold blue sky

My breath makes shapes
Chimeras of vapor
Whose memories fade
By the time I unroll the morning paper

Ephemeral demons
Doomed tokens
Reminders of something I've lost
The precious thing that I've broken

I grab a chipped bowl from the counter
It seems relatively clean
Prepare a packet of instant oatmeal
Add some milk and some heavy cream

The dawn is just threatening to break
When I sit down to my meager repast
Throw in a handful of blueberries, Georgia-grown
And wolf it down fast

An empty gesture
A hollow rite
Like the prayers I offer up
In the middle of the night
