The Owl (Live at the Rock Hill Bakehouse Café)

by Headless Relatives

/

lyrics

In the dead of the night I heard an owl cry
And I dreamt of a shadow marring the sky
And a tired frightened creature about to die
And the void it stared back from where you used to lie

A cold despair it gripped my heart
And I cursed the shadows that plied their dark arts
And I wished for a chance to make a fresh start
But your absence has claws and it tears me apart

I pulled the covers up over my head
And the last words you spoke they rang in my head
But I could not cry so I laughed instead
I couldn't look to the dawn for I know the sun's red

So in the dead of the night I sat there alone
And my muffled laughter it turned me to stone
And I realized the owl's cry was my own
And the shadows around me are cast by your bones
